Tonalide (INCI: AHTN / Acetyl Hexamethyl Tetralin) is a classic and widely used polycyclic synthetic musk aroma chemical, recognized globally for its clean, warm, and powdery musk character with a soft, slightly floral undertone. A long-established workhorse of the fragrance and personal care industry, Tonalide has been a staple ingredient in perfumes, fabric care, and personal care formulations for decades, valued consistently for its reliable performance, excellent tenacity, and broad consumer appeal. Supplied here in powder form, the purest and most concentrated format available, it gives professional formulators precise control over concentration and solvent choice.
What is Tonalide?
Tonalide is a polycyclic synthetic musk, a white to off-white crystalline powder with a clean, warm, powdery musk scent character. It belongs to the same chemical class as Galaxolide but delivers a distinctly different olfactive profile, warmer, more powdery, and slightly more animalic than Galaxolide's fresh laundry character. Tonalide powder must be dissolved before use in DPG, ethanol, or fragrance oil, its crystalline form ensures maximum purity and allows for precise weight-based measurement essential for professional formulation work.

How to Dissolve Tonalide Powder
Tonalide powder must be dissolved before incorporation into a formula. It dissolves readily in warm DPG, ethanol, or fragrance oils with gentle stirring. A standard working dilution is 10% in DPG — dissolve 10g of Tonalide powder in 90g of DPG with gentle warming to 40-50°C until fully clear. Allow to cool before use. This 10% solution can then be used directly in fragrance blending at your target usage rate.
Applications in Perfumery & Formulation
Fine Fragrance & Attar Tonalide is used as a base note musk in EDP, EDT, and attar formulations — providing clean musk warmth, depth, and tenacity. It pairs particularly well with florals, woody notes, ambers, and other musks. Combined with Galaxolide for a broader, more complex musk accord, or with Cashmeran and Ethylene Brassylate for an exceptionally rich and sophisticated musk base.
Fabric Care & Laundry Fragrance One of Tonalide's most significant commercial applications is in fabric softeners, laundry detergents, and dryer sheets — its excellent fabric tenacity and warm musk character are perfectly suited to this category, leaving a pleasant, long-lasting scent on textiles.
Personal Care Tonalide is widely used in shampoos, body washes, lotions, and creams as a base fragrance note. Its warm, inoffensive musk character is universally appealing and performs reliably in both rinse-off and leave-on personal care formats.
Home Fragrance Used in candles, reed diffusers, and room sprays for its warm, clean musk character and excellent diffusion from heated or passive delivery formats.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Tonalide differ from Galaxolide? Both are polycyclic synthetic musks but with meaningfully different scent characters. Galaxolide (HHCB) is cleaner, fresher, and more "laundry musk" in character, bright and airy. Tonalide (AHTN) is warmer, more powdery, and slightly more animalic, richer and more intimate. They are highly complementary and are frequently used together to create a more complete, multi-dimensional musk accord. Both are available at CosmetiHub.
Why is Tonalide supplied as a powder rather than liquid? Tonalide's melting point means it exists as a crystalline solid at cooler temperatures, the powder form represents its purest and most stable state for storage and transport. It dissolves readily in DPG or ethanol for use in liquid formulations. The powder format also allows for precise weight-based measurement which is essential for accurate professional formulation.
Is Tonalide IFRA compliant? Tonalide has established IFRA guidelines with usage limits for certain product categories, particularly leave-on skin products. Always consult current IFRA amendment standards for your specific application before formulating. The limits are generous for most fragrance and personal care applications but should be verified for leave-on skin contact products.
Can Tonalide be combined with other musks? Absolutely, musk layering is standard professional practice. Tonalide combines particularly well with Galaxolide for a broader fresh-warm musk accord, with Ethylene Brassylate for added naturalistic sweetness, and with Cashmeran for a rich, woody-powdery musk base of real complexity. All are available at CosmetiHub.
How long does Tonalide last on skin and fabric? Tonalide has excellent tenacity it is one of the more persistent polycyclic musks available. On skin, expect 8-12+ hours depending on concentration and skin type. On fabric, tenacity is particularly strong one of the reasons it has been a standard ingredient in fabric care products for decades.
